Katherine Ognyanova works in the areas of computational social science and network analysis. Her research has a broad focus on the impact of technology on social structures, political and civic engagement, and the media system. One of her recent projects examines the behavior of political actors (US Members of Congress) on the microblogging service Twitter. In addition to the structure of political relationships on the platform, the study explores strategic hashtag and language use. Ognyanova has also examined data collected by Politwoops: an international project that tracks politicians on Twitter and stores their deleted tweets. One outcome of her work was a set of tools for extracting, cleaning, and analyzing deleted tweets, as well as combining them with data collected from the Twitter API.
