Mary Chayko’s research explores the impact of the internet, social media and digital technology on individuals, communities, networks and societies. It has contributed to current understandings of the reality of the online experience, the intersection of the online and the offline, and opportunities for and consequences of digital social connectedness. For her Superconnected project, she is conducting extended open-ended email interviews that probe how online social connections are constructed and experienced in everyday life.
This research is included in her 2016 book Superconnected: The Internet, Digital Media and Techno-Social Life (Sage Publications), a broad-based interdisciplinary primer on technologically mediated communication and society, rooted primarily in the fields of sociology, psychology, and communication. The project can be followed via blog, videos and podcasts on her website, on her book blog http://superconnectedblog.com and on Twitter @MaryChayko.
